High school Morehead-Cain Nominating Committees nominate students.

Application deadline for U.S. candidates.
October 24, 2008
Application deadline for British and other international candidates.
October 31, 2008
The Morehead-Cain Foundation selects out-of-state semifinalists. All semifinalists will be offered the opportunity to speak with a member of the staff in an evaluative telephone interview.
November 3, 2008
Deadline for out-of-state students to apply to UNC if they wish to be considered for the Morehead-Cain by the UNC-Chapel Hill Office of Undergraduate Admissions. This is a non-binding application deadline.
The Morehead-Cain Foundation encourages all school nominees and direct applicants to apply to UNC-Chapel Hill by the November 3 early notification deadline.
November 10–11, 2008
British Morehead-Cain interviews in London; British Morehead-Cain Selection Committee selects British Morehead-Cain Scholars.
December 5, 2008
The Morehead-Cain Foundation notifies all out-of-state candidates of the results of the screening and invites 65–75 finalists to final selection events at UNC-Chapel Hill in March 2009. The Foundation notifies all North Carolina nominees and applicants of the results of the screening and invites semifinalists to regional interviews in January 2009. The Foundation notifies all international nominess, and invites international finalists to Final Selection events, to be held in Chapel Hill March 27–29, 2009.

Regional interviews held across North Carolina. Each of the 22 regional selection committees interviews 12 of the 252 semifinalists. 60–70 North Carolina finalists selected.
